Five Words

Five Words was born in 2010, but I only found out about Five Words recently thanks to Etsy. It's such a unique and inspiring idea that I had to find out more. Five Words is the lovechild of Melissa and Skye, heads full of ideas they came up with the simple concept of summing up feelings/situations/quotes in Five Words and turning it into beautiful original typography. Their little idea really took off and was rapidly spread across websites such as tumblr and is seen all over the world. I've spent so much time looking through their archive and it's such a nice feeling when you can just relate to something you read. I talked to Melissa/Skye about their project and how it all started.

How did five words all begin?

Five Words was originally a small project with the two of us wanting to learn from each other and explore new skills and techniques. Mel has an extensive graphic design background, whilst Skye is all about copywriting and marketing; we wanted to learn from each other but needed some motivation. A daily project seemed like a good way to give ourselves deadlines and structure.

For a long time not even our closest friends knew about it. Then one of us accidently posted a piece to their public blog and it went crazy! We realised that there were a lot of other people who would enjoy Five Words so we decided to not be so hush hush about it – As clichéd as it is, the rest is history.

Where do you find your inspiration?

We’re both pretty interested in music so a lot of our inspiration comes from there. Our followers and fans are pretty fantastic too. Sometimes they submit their own five words and we get really excited and inspired by that.

Have you been given any interesting opportunities since starting five words?

We have! Last year we won the Pedestrian.TV Blogger of the Year award. We won a trip to San Francisco to attend Outside Lands – that was definitely a highlight. Thanks to Five Words, we’ve also worked with Intel, Mimco and the Traffic Accident Commission (Victoria).

Do you ever find it hard to come up with ideas / five words?

Sometimes we can finish a piece in 15 minutes but usually it takes a little longer. It is pretty dependant on what is happening in our own lives. It’s certainly easier to come up with them when we’ve got something going on… whether that’s a new job, great weekend or romantic date. We draw from our own lives a fair bit so that tends a to carry across to the words we choose.

Five Words has been seen in the press and across the world, how does that feel?

Weird, but great! We started Five Words without thinking about things like that so it’s really strange to see our work in a blog or magazine from a different country. We love it though.

You also sell prints on etsy, is this something you would like to expand on?

Yeah definitely. We have over 700 pieces of artwork on our website and to think that they more of them could be in people’s homes is an absolute blast.

Describe your perfect morning in five words?

Late Starts, Pancakes & Sunshine.

What does 2013 hold for Five Words?

2012 was huge for us so it’s going to be difficult to top. Definitely lots of learning and more freelance work. Maybe more travelling, new products in our store and hopefully a new site!

I hope you love their project as much as I do, I can't wait to see what 2013 will held for Five Words. if you would like to find out more you can visit their blog here, as well as on facebook and twitter.  Don't forget you can also buy prints here.
